On 22 December 2013, Geelong line services began using dedicated V/Line tracks between South Kensington and the new platforms 15 and 16 at Southern Cross Station.
The new track and platforms, built as part of the Regional Rail Link project, eliminate the first of many bottlenecks that the project will remove, providing a more streamlined and reliable journey for Geelong passengers to and from the heart of the city.
To utilise the new infrastructure, Geelong line trains arriving or departing from platform 15 and 16 no longer stop at North Melbourne railway station.
Geelong line passengers need to transfer to metropolitan services at Footscray or Southern Cross to access North Melbourne railway station. Geelong line services will not be affected by the summer works timetable.
More information about travel changes as a result of the activation of platforms 15 and 16 can be found in the Changes to Geelong line services brochure (PDF, 75 KB, 2 pp.).
