Anderson Road
We will be removing two level crossings on Anderson Road in Sunshine, by moving the road over or under the railway. Removing the level crossings will alleviate congestion, reduce travel times and improve safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
The works will allow for the extra trains that will pass through Sunshine when the Regional Rail Link and other improvements to the public transport network are complete.

Level crossing locations
The two level crossings on Anderson Road are in the following locations:
North – near King Edward Avenue in Sunshine, on the Bendigo, Sydenham and freight lines
South – between Forrest Street and Sun Crescent in Sunshine, on the Ballarat line.
North design
In place of the level crossing on the Bendigo and Sydenham lines we will build:
- a new road underpass for the Bendigo, Sydenham and freight rail lines. The railway tracks will remain at their current height and the road will be lowered to allow vehicles to travel underneath
- a new shared-use path on the eastern side of Anderson Road, providing an uninterrupted bicycle and pedestrian connection across the Bendigo, Sydenham and freight rail lines

Existing level crossing at the Bendigo and Sydenham lines

South design
In place of the level crossing on the Ballarat line there will be:
- a regrading of Anderson Road, which will be raised slightly to allow the railway tracks to run underneath
- a new shared-use path on the eastern side of Anderson Road, providing an uninterrupted bicycle and pedestrian connection over the Ballarat rail underpass

Benefits of removing the level crossings
- Allows traffic to move freely and with fewer interruptions on this busy arterial road which carries about 25,000 vehicles per day
- Removes of two level crossings which are within 500 metres of each other and close hundreds of times a day
- Future-proofs the transport network against increased road traffic and train services - without this work, travel times along Anderson Road are expected to increase substantially
- Improves safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians
- Eliminates noise from boom gates and rail signals and reduces traffic congestion
